Rensselaer Holds Off Bombers 127-115

Ithaca, N.Y. -- The Bombers opened their season with a 127-115 loss to visiting Rensselaer. The defeat ended Ithaca’s 18-meet home winning streak, dating back to 1997.

The meet was decided by the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay. The Bombers originally won the race – which would have led to a come-from-behind win in the team scoring – but a disqualification against Ithaca gave Rensselaer the win in both the event and the meet.

Leading the Bombers in victories was senior Steve Barnes (Malvern Prep/Glenmoore, Pa.), who won the 1000- (10:17.27), the 200-(1:48.88), and the 500-yard freestyles (4:56.30). Junior Miguel Escobedo (Curtis/Staten Island) won the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.23) freshman Matt Olko (Rye/Harrison) won the 50-yard freestyle (22.55).
