Ithaca, N.Y. -- The Ithaca Bombers hosted the New York State Division III Women's Tennis Championships this weekend at the Reis Tennis Center at Cornell University, featuring 13 of the top women's collegiate tennis teams in the state. Competition was held in six singles flights and three doubles flights in a single-elimination bracket. The top three seeds in each flight received a first-round bye to the quarterfinals. There was no team scoring at the event.
Sophomore
Melissa Nunez (Morris Hills/Rockaway, N.J.) highlighted a successful weekend for Ithaca by advancing to the championship match in sixth singles, where she lost 7-6, 6-2 to the top-seeded player from Vassar. In total, the Bombers advanced to the semifinals in four of the nine flights.
"The team played great.
Melissa Nunez came into her own and played a great tournament," Bomber coach Bill Austin said. "For us, it showed the depth of our team in competing against quality draws from the best teams in New York state. We had some deep runs in doubles, and caps off a really solid fall season for us."
Ithaca won the Empire 8 championship and has automatically qualified for the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships in May.
