Williamstown, Mass. – The #23 College of New Jersey (20-2-1) scored the game's only goal in the second half of a 1-0 win over the #15 Ithaca women’s soccer team (16-5-2) in an NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament sectional final Sunday. The Bombers have made three consecutive appearances in the national quarterfinals.
Neither team scored or generated many chances in an evenly-played first half. The Bombers' best scoring opportunity of the second half came in the 62nd minute when senior midfielder Amy Scheffer (Schalmont/Schenectady) dribbled past two defenders and left a pass for sophomore midfielder Megan Trager (Sharon/Sharon, Mass.). who shot over the crossbar from about 18 yards out.
New Jersey scored the game-winning goal in the 71st minute when Allyson Anderson played a pass through the middle of the field by the Ithaca defense for Briann McDonough, who carried the ball around the Ithaca goalkeeper and tapped a shot over the goal line.
Ithaca threatened to tie the game in the final 10 minutes and a left-foot shot from 20 yards by Scheffer in the 82nd minute was caught by New Jersey goalkeeper Jessica Clarke. Clarke made five saves in the game. Ithaca junior goalkeeper Jessica Platt (Monument Mountain/New Marlborough, Mass.) made nine saves including an excellent stop on a hard shot in the 81st minute.
