Ithaca, N.Y.--Men's track & field senior Cory Petermann (West Morris-Mendham/Chester, N.J.) qualified for the NCAA Championships in the pentathlon at the New York State Collegiate Track Conference (NYSCTC) Championships, hosted by Ithaca at Cornell's Barton Hall. Petermann scored 3,478 points, breaking the school record by seven points. Seniors Dustin James (Newfield/Newfield) and Michael Wodarski (McQuaid Jesuit/Rochester) also competed for the Bombers, placing sixth and eighth, respectively.
Petermann scored over 400 more points than he did at the same competition last year. He broke the school record of 3,470 previously held by Kevin Alford, who held the record for exactly nine years. Petermann's performance surpassed the NCAA qualifying standard of 3,400 points.
En route to the state title, Petermann recorded the top performance in both the high jump (1.87 meters, 687 points) and shot put (12.59 meters, 642 points). He had the second-best showing in the long jump (6.50 meters, 697 points).
James scored 3,167 points to finish sixth. His highest-scoring event was the 55-meter hurdles. He scored 791 points, and his time of 8.17 was the third-fastest in the field of 11 athletes. James also had the field's third-best showing in the long jump (6.18 meters, 626 points) and shot put (10.40 meters, 510 points).
Wodarski finished eighth with 2,810 points. His highest event point total was 737, which came with a 8.40 performance in the hurdles. Wodarksi matches James for the afternoon's third-best showing in the long jump (6.18 meters, 626 points.
The Bombers will continue the NYSCTC Championships on Friday and Saturday, competing in individual events and relays at Rochester Institute of Technology.
