Big Day Two Showing Leads Men's Track & Field To State Crown

Canton, N.Y. -- The men's track & field team won three events Satruday and beat runner-up Rensselaer by 58 points at the New York State Collegiate Track Conference (NYSCTC) Championships. Jim Nichols was named NYSCTC Coach of the Year for leading the Bombers to their second outdoor state title.
Sophomores Max Orenstein (Trumbull/Trumbull,Conn.) and Jeff Wetmore (Bemus Point/Maple Grove) both posted provisional NCAA-qualifying times in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. In the 100, Orenstein placed second at 10.75 with Wetmore third at 10.78. Wetmore won the 200 with a time of 21.56 and Orenstein plced third at 21.68. Wetmore's time in the 200 broke the school record of 21.67, set in 1992 by Jason Jackson.
Senior Cory Petermann (West Morris-Mendham/Chester, N.J.) also provisionally qualified for the national championships. He threw the javelin 61.48 meters to win the event.
Ithaca also had four ECAC Championship-qualifying performances Saturday. Sophomores Chris Stahlmann (Goshen/Goshen) and Kramer Jakubek (Monroe-Woodbury/Monroe) both cleared 1.90 meters in the high jump, with Stahlmann placing third and Jakubek fourth.
Both Bomber relay teams qualified for ECAC's. The 400-meter relay team ran 42.20 to place first and the 1,600-meter relay team placed second at 3:22.94.
