17 State Titles In 24 Years For Women's Track & Field

NYSCTC Rookie of the Year Emma Dewart won the state high jump crown

Canton, N.Y. -- Titles in nine events led the women's track & field team to first place at the New York State Collegiate Track Conference (NYSCTC) Championships. The Bombers, who have won 17 state championships since 1987, scored 274.50 points -- more than the second-place and third-place teams combined. Freshman Emma Dewart (Barker/Barker) was named NYSCTC Rookie of the Year and Coach of the Year honors went to Ithaca's Jennifer Potter.

Senior Lauren Koppel (Southside/Rockville Center) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships, winning the 100-meter hurdles at 14.73. She broke the school record in the event, set by Elena DeQuesada (14.80) in 2005.

Koppel also placed second in the javelin throw at 36.28 meters and fifth in the high jump at 1.53 meters. She qualified for the ECAC Championships in the javelin.

As a team, the Bombers won six events Saturday. Sophomore Marcia McCord (Rancocas Valley/Mount Holly, N.J.) won three events: the 200-meter dash (25.48), 400-meter dash (57.54) and the triple jump (11.00 meters). She qualified for the ECAC Championships in al three.

Freshmen Dewart and Ashley Dlubac (Merrimack Valley/Loudon, N.H.) bot won events with ECAC-caliber performances. Dewart, the state champion in the heptathlon, won the high jump at 1.63. Dlubac took the javelin at 36.89 meters.

Dewart was also an ECAC-qualifier in the 100-meter hurdles at 15.18, placing third.

In the 5,000-meter run, juniors Melanie McCormick (Champlain Valley Union/Williston, Vt.) and Amanda Boccio (Guilderland/Albany) both posted ECAC-qualifying times. McCormick placed second at 18:32.88, with Boccio finishing third at 18:36.03.

The 1,600-meter team of sophomores Lindsay Harris (John C. Birdlebough/Phoenix), Emily Moran (Walkill/Walkill) and Emily Ondrejka (Westhill/Syracuse) and freshman Molly Brown (North Penn/Landsdale, Pa.) placed second. They ran 4:09.65 and qualified for ECAC's.

The Bombers return to action Saturday at Randall's Island.
