No school has made more NCAA playoff appearances than Ithaca

ITHACA, N.Y. – Ithaca College has announced its 2009 schedule. The Bombers, who won the Empire 8 title and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals last fall, will be playing one of their most difficult schedules this season.

The Bombers (17-3-2 a year ago) will face five NCAA playoff teams this fall, including defending national champion Messiah. Ithaca will face the host Falcons a day after opening its season with a Sept. 4 game at Gettysburg. William Smith, an NCAA semifinalist last fall, is also on Ithaca’s schedule along with NCAA playoff participants Nazareth, Oneonta and Skidmore.

Ithaca’s non-conference opponents combined for a 108-46-31 record in 2008, good for a .667 winning percentage.

For the ninth year in a row, the top four teams in the Empire 8 standings will qualify for the conference’s championship tournament. Ithaca has been the top seed in seven of the eight previous tournaments.

The Bombers have made 19 trips to the NCAA playoffs; no school has made more, winning two titles and reaching the final four five times. Ithaca has reached the quarterfinal round the past two years, losing to the eventual national runner-up both seasons.
