Bristol, R.I. – The Ithaca men's soccer team (1-1-1) scored a goal in each half and defeated Fitchburg State (0-2-0) 2-0 Sunday at the Roger Williams University/Turfer Classic.
Ithaca opened its scoring in the 33rd minute when freshman back Ryan Norland (East Brunswick/East Brunswick, N.J.) crossed a pass into the penalty area and senior forward Fernando Casanova (Loyola/Santo Domingo, D.R.) shot home to give the Bombers a 1-0 lead.
The Bombers controlled possession and maintained the lead. Ithaca outshot Fitchburg State 26-8 in the game and held an 11-2 edge in corner kicks.
Ithaca stretched its lead to 2-0 in the 82nd minute when junior midfielder Jeff Geyer (Rham/Hebron, Conn.) scored on a direct kick from the left side, outside of the penalty area.
Junior goalkeeper Justin Parlapiano (Stafford/Stafford Springs, Conn.) recorded his second shutout in three games this season. He made two saves. Ithaca has conceded just one goal through its first three games.
The Bombers will play their first home game of the season when they return to action Saturday at 3 p.m. versus Hamilton.
