ITHACA, N.Y.--Sophomore Emma Dewart (Barker/Barker) broke a 27-year old record with 3,508 points at the New York State Collegiate Track Conference (NYSCTC) pentathlon championships. Dewart scored the most points in the event by any athlete in the nation this season, and won her second straight state title. Graduate student Lauren Koppel (Southside/Rockville Center) placed second in the event, and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships.
Dewart had the field's best performance in the high jump, long jump and 800-meter run. Dewart high jumped 1.64 meters (5-4 1/2") for 783 points, long jumped 5.45 meters (17-10 3/4") for 686 points and ran 2:28.64 in the 800 for 710 points. She also had the second-best finish in the 55-meter hurdles at 8.75 for 826 points.
Dewart's score broke the school record 3,436 points scored by Caryl Senn in 1983. It eclipsed the automatic NCAA standard of 3,400 points.
Koppel's score ranks her 11th in the nation. She had the field's best performance in both the 55-meter hurdles (8.55) and shot put (10.66 meters/34-11 3/4"), scoring 869 and 573 points in the two events, respectively. Her time in the hurdles was just .01 seconds off her own school record in the event.
Freshman Amanda Rissmeyer (Watching/Millington, N.J.) and sophomore Ashley Dlubac (Merrimack Valley/Loudon, N.H.) joined Dewart and Koppel in earning all-state honors. Rissmeyer placed third with 2,884 points with Dlubac seventh with 2,489.
Ithaca will take its 26 points scored into the main part of the NYSCTC Championships, to be held Friday and Saturday at Rochester Institute of Technology.
