ITHACA, N.Y. – Six members of the Ithaca women’s tennis team and its head coach combined to earn a total of 11 honors as the Empire 8 announced its women’s tennis all-conference team and individual awards for the 2009 season. Freshman #Cristina Nunez# (Morris Hills/Rockaway, N.J.) was the Empire 8 Women’s Tennis Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year. She became just the third Bomber among all sports to sweep those two awards in her first collegiate campaign. Head coach Bill Austin was the Empire 8 Coach of the Year for the fifth year in a row. Rochester, N.Y. -- The women's tennis team (9-0), seeded first in the Empire 8 Championship Tournament, posted a dominant 9-0 win over fourth-seeded Nazareth (5-6) in Saturday's semifinal round. Ithaca will face second-seeded Stevens, a 5-2 winner over third-seeded Rochester Institute of Technology in Saturday's other semifinal, Sunday at noon in the tournament final. She teamed with classmate #Sarah Hollis# (Greens Farms Academy/Fairfield, Conn.) to win the doubles title at the New York State Division III Women's Tennis Championships. The pair defeated the top-seeded team in the semifinals and the fourth-seeded team in the fianls, each by 8-5 scors.
