Ithaca, N.Y. – The top-seeded Cortland Red Dragons (44-7) defeated the fourth-seeded Buffalo State Bengals (33-14) 6-0 on Sunday in the second game of the championship round in the double elimination NCAA Division III Softball Tournament regional being held at Ithaca College. Cortland advances to the NCAA Division III Softball World Series at Montclair State.
A three-run home run from Cortland's Emily Ringen gave the Red Dragons a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. In the second, Cortland's Donnalyn Cross singled to drive in Jackie Begnoche, who reached base on a single to center field. Cortland added another run in the third on a two-out double from Bethany Williamson to extend the Red Dragon lead to 5-0. Crystal Carlson singled to left field in the sixth to drive in Jackie Begnoche which gave Cortland the 6-0 advantage.
Cortland's Katie Finch was the winning pitcher. She allowed just three hits in a complete-game performance and registered 11 strikeouts to improve to 26-5 on the season. Amy Fisher took the loss for Buffalo State, falling to 7-2 on the season.
